The Manufacturing Engineering Technician relies on extensive experience and judgment to set up standard and/or custom test apparatus or devise test equipment and circuitry to conduct functional, operational, environmental and life tests to evaluate performance and reliability of prototype or production model PCA' s and complete units. Responsible for technical functions in support of engineering activities such as design, test, checkout, modification, fabrication and assembly of prototype electro-mechanical systems, experimental design circuitry or specialized test equipment. Troubleshoots systems and printed circuit card assemblies down to the component level. Writes technical reports to describe and illustrate system' s operating characteristics, malfunctions, or deviations from design specifications.

Under limited supervision, the Manufacturing Engineer Technician works from written and/or verbal instructions, including engineering drawings and test procedures, positions, builds, tests, repairs and modifies production of mechanical and electronic components and instruments.


Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following. Other duties may be assigned.
  • Test, rework and troubleshoot standard products, equipment and circuitry, including functional, operational and environmental testing in internal tanks, local lakes or ocean environments
  • Configure standard test apparatus for the purposes of performing semi-operational, environmental and life tests on PCA’ s and complete production models
  • Troubleshoot and debug software/firmware controlled PCA’ s and profiler systems and subsystems
  • Analyze and interpret test data for board and system level
  • Adjust, calibrate, align and modify circuitry/components as well as record effect(s) on unit performance
  • Layout, build, test, troubleshoot, repair and/or modify development or production electronic components, parts, equipment and systems
  • Discuss layout and assembly procedures and problems with Engineers or management and draws sketches to clarify design details and functional criteria of electronic units
  • Recommend changes in circuitry or installation specifications to simplify assembly and maintenance
  • Work from schematics, diagrams, written and verbal descriptions, layouts or defined plans to perform testing, checkout and trouble-shooting functions
  • Read blueprints, wiring diagrams, schematic drawings, or engineering instructions for assembling electronics units, applying knowledge of electronic theory and components.
  • Write technical reports and develop charts, graphs and schematics to describe and illustrate systems operating characteristics, malfunctions, deviations from design specifications and functional limitations

  • An associate (two-year technical) degree, a diploma from a technical or vocational school or equivalent military training
  • Requires a minimum of 5 years of related experience
  • Advanced circuit analysis with the ability to troubleshoot systems and printed circuit card assemblies to root cause using schematics, electronic and operational theory and logic
  • Strong troubleshooting skills to the component level is required
  • Must have strong knowledge of the principles of electronics and troubleshooting techniques
  • Experience testing electronic assemblies using both traditional and non-traditional tooling such as multi-meter, oscilloscope, spectrum analyzer, power supply, function generator, LCD meter, etc.
  • Experience using a variety of hand tools and machine shop tools and equipment (grinders, drill press, etc.)
  • Intermediate MS Office skills including ability to open and create files in Word, create and manipulate data in Excel and use E-mail and calendars in Outlook
  • ERP/MRP system experience is desirable with the skills to review Bills of Materials (BOM), inventory quantities and locations, and other component information
  • Must have effective written and verbal communication skills at a business level; follow written and verbal procedures, instructions, read blueprints and schematics, and write business reports about the work accomplished
