Conducts metallography and mechanical testing. Writes lab procedures. Generates test reports and certifications. Works independently in M&P lab, order supplies, schedules calibration of equipment, repairs & preventative maintenance to determine work priorities, control work flow.

Position Accountabilities and Performance Objectives:   
  • Selects parameters for preparing metallographic samples (including etching) and plasma spray procedures.
  • Prepares and evaluates metallographic samples, produces photomicrographs. 
  • Prepares lab reports, summarize results of metallographic evaluation and attach photomicrographs. 
  • Conducts wet chemistry testing to verify and track process solution control.    
  • Conducts Alpha case evaluation on heat-treated titanium.            
  • Performs braze evaluation for deficiencies to customer specs.         
  • Performs destructive testing to certify welders, issue certification, and maintain records for audit purposes.
  • Certify spot weld schedules micro evaluation.       
  • Evaluates plasma spray qualification and booth release samples.       
  • Creates photomicrographs and updates metallographic & photo standards for customer acceptance and training purposes.    
  • Conducts mechanical testing including room temperature and elevated temperature tensile, and compression tests, micro and superficial hardness tests, bend and shear tests.  
  • Coordinates outside testing and reviews test results.              
  • Prepares round and flat tensile specimens.        
  • Evaluates ion nitride qualification and process validation samples and prepares M & PE reports. 
  • Performs acceptance testing of metallographic samples with image analysis system. 
  • Performs sieve comparison with customer specs. 
  • Assists engineers, in research and development projects.
  • Assists metals laboratory technicians, when required. 
  • Performs heat-treating of laboratory samples and small lots of production hardware.  
  • Assists supervisor in training when required.

The following job accountabilities may be reassigned:   
  • Assesses need for cleaning and masking operations.      
  • Performs other related duties as assigned or requested.
  • May require training in hazardous material handling, dependent upon job assignment.         

Position Qualifications:
  • Minimum Education - Vocational/Specialized Training.
  • Associate' s Degree or equivalent.
  • Minimum Experience of 3-5 years.
  • Answer telephones.
  • Input data into computer programs.
  • Maintain filing systems.
  • Maintain logs.
  • Use computer packages to prepare graphics.
  • Use computerized spreadsheets to conduct analysis.
  • Machine  Calculator.
  • Personal Computer.
  • No supervisory responsibility.
  • Supervised: nature of work Technical work.
  • Working Conditions Occasional bending, reaching, climbing

Physical Demands:           
  • Standing: remaining on one' s feet in an upright position.
  • Walking: moving about on foot.
  • Sitting: remaining in the normal seated position.
  • Lifting: raising or lowering an object from one level to another.
  • Carrying: transporting an object, usually by hand, arm, or shoulder.
  • Stooping: bending the body by bending spine at the waist.
  • Kneeling: bending legs to come to rest on one or both knees.
  • Reaching: extending the hand(s) and arm(s) in any direction.
  • Talking: expressing or exchanging ideas by means of spoken words.
  • Hearing: perceiving the nature of sounds by the ear.

Physical Strength:           
  • Light Work: frequent lifting of up to 10 lbs; frequent standing/walking.

Vision Requirements:     
  • Accommodation: ability to adjust vision to bring objects into focus.
