The successful candidate will serve as a Network Engineer working on the United States Antarctic Program’ s (USAP) Information Technology and Communications (IT&C) Transition project.  

This project will extend the current USAP network and relocate work centers due to McMurdo Station construction. 

Candidate will work closely with other project team members and operations team members to achieve project requirements including: 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Document current-state network, mobile and mission communications and media services architectures.
  • Document requirements for infrastructure relocations.
  • Assist with technology assessments for equipment life-cycle.
  • Assist with development of network, mobile and mission communications and media services designs to accommodate work center relocations.
  • Assist with development of implementation plans for work center relocations.
  • Assist with development of Concept of Operations for work centers after relocation.
  • Provide status updates to senior management staff.
  • Candidate must be capable of requirements analysis, preparing designs and plans for network systems, expansions and upgrades in order to provide connectivity according to customer requirements. 
  • Candidate maintains technical expertise in all areas of network and computer hardware and software interconnection and interfacing such as routers, switches, firewalls, WAN accelerators, and physical cabling infrastructure.
  • Act as a Network Engineer for multiple projects
  • Act as technical liaison for all project stakeholders.
  • Support Operations and Maintenance activities associated with the USAP network
  • Isolate faults and diagnose system failures to resolve problems in a methodical, thorough, and timely manner.
  • Proactively look for methods to improve the efficiency and reliability of the USAP infrastructure.
  • Provide documentation for all network changes.
  • Maintain secure networking environments based on industry best practice security standards in conjunction with USAP policies.
  • Provide engineering support to IT for new deployments, enhancements, or modifications to IT systems, both on and off Ice.
  • Manage personal tasking as directed by IT management to ensure timely implementation or delivery of critical USAP infrastructure.
  • Coordinate any modifications to the USAP network environment with other IT departments and affected users.
  • Assist with life-cycle management evaluations and recommendations.
  • Provide technical expertise to other teams as required.
  • Excellent communication ability and the ability to work well with others in a diplomatic fashion is an essential skill.
  • Responsible for maintaining a safe workplace program and ensuring safety is the highest priority in the work place.
  •   Perform other duties as needed.

Basic Qualifications:
  • Strong expertise in primary network topologies, LANs/WANs (Ethernet), TCP/IP protocol (IPv4) and other common network standards.
  • Strong expertise demonstrating the ability to design, implement and support enterprise network switched and routed architectures.
  • Expertise with the configuration and management of Palo Alto firewalls.
  • Experience designing and operating Network Segmentation technologies.
  • Experience designing and operating Network Access Control (NAC) solutions.
  • Experience designing and operating networks using routing protocols such as BGP, EIGRP, OSPF, and static routing.
  • Experience designing new systems or upgrades to existing network systems.
  • Experience developing Concept of Operations, Requirements, Basis of Design, and critical design documents and drawings.
  • Experience installing, configuring and maintaining Cisco routers and switches.
  • Experience with network management applications and related protocols such as SNMP and Netflow.
  • Ability to perform fault isolation and resolution in a methodical, thorough manner.
  • Understanding of and experience applying Information Security concepts to core network infrastructure and data transport.
  • The ability to work well with others in a diplomatic and professional fashion.
  • The ability to clearly and effectively communicate through verbal and written means.

Desired Skills:
  • Current and valid Cisco certifications including CCNP, CCDA, CCDP and CCIE are desired and preferred.
  • Experience with the configuration and management of Palo Alto firewalls is desired.
  • Experience with the configuration and management of Bradford NAC appliances is desired.
  • Experience with the design, configuration, and management of Cisco wireless systems is desired.
  • Experience with QoS, IPSec, VPN technologies and best practices is desired.
  • Experience with IPv6 is desired.
  • Experience with IP Address space management is desired.
  • Experience with BGP, EIGRP, OSPF and static routing is desired.
  • Experience with data transmission over satellites is desired.
  • Experience with the unique requirements of operating in Antarctica is desired.
  • Experience with Project management, cost estimation, cost analysis, scheduling, tasking, staffing, and reporting is desired.

Typical Minimums:
  • Typically requires a Bachelors degree and 4 – 8 years of prior relevant experience or Masters with 2 - 6 year of prior relevant experience. 
  • Considered career or journey level.

Must- Haves (Hard Skills):
